Mid-week healthy bites
In this episode…
Removing our shoes and simply standing in contact with the earth’s surface has been shown to have wide ranging benefits for our health from reducing inflammation to improving the immune response to reducing stress and encouraging better sleep.
With such a vast array of benefits – why isn’t it something that we do more often?
Listen in to find out what exactly earthing is and how you can implement it into your life easily without any cost!

Amanda: [00:00:19] Hi guys! Today I want to talk about earthing.
Have you heard of it? Or maybe you know it by it’s other name – grounding.
And if you haven’t heard of it, you’re not alone because this concept isn’t often considered when it comes to good health. However, what we’re starting to see now is the research is emerging, which is showing the positive effects that earthing or grounding actually does have on our health in terms of things such as reducing inflammation, improving the immune response, wound healing, reduction in stress, better sleep and increased energy amongst other things.
Pretty cool. Isn’t it?
[00:01:00] Well, You might be thinking that all sounds a little bit woo woo, but hear me out.
If you recall, back in episode four, I was talking about holistic health being a multifaceted concept. And I also mentioned that primary foods are the things which nourish us just as much as the food on our plate. So not nutrition, but the other aspects of health and earthing is one of those things which falls into the environmental health category. It is so often overlooked!
What exactly is it?
So earthing or grounding is the direct physical contact of our bodies with the supply of electrons on the surface of the earth.
Except for ultra dry areas, such as deserts, the earth surface actually is electrically conductive. essentially the earth is just like a gigantic battery, which contains a really natural subtle electrical charge.
And you’re probably thinking that’s great, but so what?
You’ve heard of free radicals right? These are the unstable [00:02:00] molecules that can damage the cells in your body. And they’re the ones that are involved in the body’s inflammatory and immune responses, and are linked to premature aging and illness.
The thing is free radicals are a byproduct of our normal metabolic processes, such as breathing oxygen, which we all do, but they can also come from other environmental sources – things like pesticides, cigarette smoke, and other pollutants too. And when you’re young and you’re healthy, our bodies do a pretty good job of getting rid of these.
But if you’re not eating right, or you are exposed to a lot of different environmental factors, as well as aging… your risk for cellular and organ damage goes up.
So here’s the really cool part and where earthing comes into the picture. When our bodies are grounded to the earth surface, they build up a supply of free electrons. And it is these free electrons, which stabilize our body’s bioelectrical systems and prevent the oxidation of healthy tissue.
So when we take off our shoes and we step onto the ground, the negative ions from the [00:03:00] earth surface are absorbed straight through our feet and throughout our bodies and discharge any imbalanced, positive ions that we may have been lugging around with us. It essentially allows every part of the body to equilibrate and stabilize the electrical environment of all of our organs, tissues, and cells.
So in other words, earthing, it actually neutralizes those free radicals which are running around our bodies. Pretty cool, hey?
Earthing is something that used to be present in our lives so many years ago, but modern life has pretty much all but removed this. I mean, if you consider how we spend our days… so many of us are spending our days indoors, where our bodies are continually being bombarded by electrical waves from computers and other technologies around us…. we barely go outside. Then when we do go outside, we’re always walking around in rubber soled shoes, which acting as a barrier to the earth. I mean, when do our feet actually connect with the earth? We are so disconnected.
And the funny thing is many individuals [00:04:00] are reluctant to walk outside barefoot. In fact, the only time this seems to occur is when they’re on holiday down at the beach, but think about it – how good does that sand feel between your toes? And it’s not just the fact that you’re on holidays that is benefiting your health. It is being in direct contact with the earth that is making the difference.
So what’s the easiest way. I can tell you one very quick and easy way, and it is free. Simply kick off shoes and stand on the ground.
And it doesn’t matter what it is as long as it’s a natural surface. So I’m talking grass, it could be rock, sand, water. It doesn’t matter. I know for me personally, when my energy is feeling low, simply stepping outside with the grass under my feet and the sun on my face immediately re-energizes and calms me.
So give it a go. Even if it’s just for a few minutes a day, you’ll certainly notice a difference.
