Amanda: Welcome to episode 29 of the Heart Driven Hustle podcast. We’re your hosts, Amanda and Kingsley. And in this episode, we’re giving you five reasons why personal development is an integral part to your success, both in business and in life.

Learning beyond the school room, isn’t boring and it could be the game-changer you are waiting for!

[00:01:00]Kingsley: Yeah, this topic is near and dear to our hearts. I know, both of us have done some personal development in the past,

Amanda: probably in the past 18 months. We’ve really ramped it up.

Kingsley: Yeah. And I think, yeah, personal development, you know, a lot of people think, ah, it’s classroom boring stuff, but I actually find personal development, really actionable type stuff.

And it’s really interesting. you know, moving away from. A typical kind of classroom or university lecture type thing, and really getting nitty gritty and getting to know yourself and business opportunities better, I think is a great thing.

Amanda: Sure. It’s less about being talked at you, which is all  that traditional schooling was.

And it’s about getting to go deep and really understand who you are as a person, what you want in life and yeah  how are you going to make that happen?

Kingsley: Great. Excellent. So let’s dive in.

Amanda: I know for many people [00:02:00] learning stops as soon as they exit formal schooling. And it really is one of those things that is so critical to any successful entrepreneur out there. And I’m talking about ongoing personal development, not just a one-off thing, not a set and forget you do it once and you go, that’s it.

This is something that you should do as a continual investment and really needs to be factored into your business too. And I think one of the coolest things that a lot of people forget is that if it is business-related, I mean, this is going to be a tax deduction in the majority of circumstances as well.

I mean, there’s a caveat on that. I’m not an accountant. I can’t give financial advice, but it is certainly something to consider.

And personal development comes in all different shapes and forms. It could be something like courses. It could be trainings, it could be seminars, whether it’s face-to-face or online, it is in so many different formats. You’ve just got to find what works for you.

Kingsley: I think it depends on, what part of the journey you’re on.

[00:03:00] They’re almost like stepping stones to the next, you know, your next big break, your next thing, your next adventure. So at takes on so many different forms it’s It’s really incredible tool.

Amanda: Yeah. So true. I mean, don’t look at someone who says, Oh, I’ve just gone and spent $25,000 on this personal development course, or I’ve gone to the latest Tony Robbins seminar, which I’ve dropped thousands on and had to fly halfway around the world. Sure. That’s what it looks like for some people. And maybe that’s what it will look like for you to further on down the journey. But when you’re first starting out, it can be something so simple than it doesn’t have to be expensive either.

Yeah.

there’s actually a really great quote, which I think sums up personal development perfectly. And it’s by Lao Tzu, who is a Chinese philosopher and he’s the guy who’s credited with founding the philosophical  system of Taoism. And the quote goes, “knowing others is intelligence. Knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power.”

Kingsley: yeah, pretty [00:04:00] powerful stuff. You know, you don’t have to go walking over hot coals with Tony Robbins.

Amanda: You can, if you want.

Kingsley: And if you want to get the most out of this,   so let’s jump into our top five reasons to keep working on yourself and personal development.

Amanda: So reason, number one, it improves your self-awareness. Personal development is such an important opportunity to really pause and take an honest look at your life across a multitude of different areas. Now we’re looking at this from not only a business perspective, but also from life in general.

So who are you? Get really deep and get to know who you are as a person. And what are your goals in life? Where do you want to be in 12 months, five years, 10 years, even a hundred years.

I actually recently did an activity that was looking at my goals and my vision for my life in 500 years and even a thousand years.

So I know, this is well beyond my own lifetime, but the purpose of doing so was [00:05:00] about creating that legacy and thinking about, well, what. Impact am I going to have? And what am I going to leave on this earth that is beyond  what is greater than me and just my physical body. So it was actually a really cool activity to do.

You don’t have to do that, but it was just something that I found was quite eye-opening.  other things to consider are like, what are your strengths and weaknesses?

You’ve probably sat down and done a SWOT analysis and something that you did in high school. Yeah. Oh my God. I hate this. We’re not talking about that, but it’s a really good place to start because all of these things really start to help form a picture of you as a person.

And when you know what you’re good at or where you need to improve, it just goes to making you a better person in general.

Kingsley: And you raised a good point, right at the start there, where you talked about, it’s a holistic approach. It’s not just your business life, but it’s your personal life also because it’s very rare that you [00:06:00] see someone that’s an absolute train wreck in their personal life.

And yet they. Got everything together in their, their business life and vice versa. So for things to grow, you’re going to have to grow yourself. You’re going to have to be a better person to be a better business person. And, the same goes the other way. You, you, to be a better business person, you’re going to have to be a better person overall.

So, these things work both ways. It’s not just a boring business thing. It’s also, very important. personal development tool, which is why it’s called personal development.

Amanda: It just made me think of another tool that I’ve used, which is called the circle of life. And very much like what Kingsley mentioned it’s about.

Creating this balanced approach to all areas of your life as well. So by using the circle of life, you were able to identify, well, where am I lacking? And one of the areas, so is my career lacking, or am I lacking in spirituality? Or is it home life or is it health? Is I won’t go into it too much, but it’s just another one of the [00:07:00] tools well, you can really try to balance yourself out, across all of the areas in your life, not just one or the other, but it’s that real holistic approach, which is pretty cool.

And under this particular banner of improving self-awareness, it’s also about creating that vision and mission for your life so much like I talked about where I’d actually sat down and worked out 500 years, a thousand years from now, it’s about creating that really clear vision, because if you don’t know what you want, how are you going to get there?

Another great tool around this is creating a mission statement as well and reading on a daily basis.

So this is truly valuable because it’s that constant reminder of what you’re trying to achieve and what it looks like to you and how it feels to you. Because when you can feel it, you can start to put those actions that you need into place to help get you there.

Kingsley: point number two. So it expand your perspective and allows you to start living without limits.

Amanda: This is a good idea because you [00:08:00] don’t know there’s more out there until, you know, if you don’t know, you don’t know.

Kingsley: So true.

Amanda: So personal development allows you to start expanding your networks and interacting with new people.

People out there who are, say more financially successful or wealthy, or have achieved greater things in their own careers or lives. And it’s going to ignite that desire within you to achieve more yourself.

So, for example, you, might’ve grown up in circles where you think they’re earning $10,000 per month is great.

You’re thinking once you’ve hit that, you’ve absolutely made it. That’s the end game and that’s all you need to get.  well, that’s what you think until he meets someone who is earning that per week or even per day.

You start dreaming bigger and you’re increase that awareness for your even greater potential. You start thinking, okay, well, if they’re earning 10 grand a week, how can I do that? And by the way, how can I is such an incredible question to be asking yourself? Because it gets your mind thinking [00:09:00] in a really different way. It gets you to start thinking what are the steps that I need to put into place  to achieve that. It gets you thinking really critically and in a solutions oriented mode. So I highly recommend if you ever come up against a problem, ask yourself, how can I solve it?

And tip number three, personal development makes you much more confident and it builds resilience as well.

Confidence is such a large part of success. Those who are less confident can find themselves quite easily  procrastinating around their goals or even giving up because they don’t feel quite capable. Have you ever felt that sometimes it takes you so much longer when you’re not confident about something you second, guess yourself, you go back and forth, what seems like a million times, and then you might not even follow through with it.

I have done this personally so many times when I do something new. So for example, creating my own content, whether it be my first IGTV or something like that, [00:10:00] what I felt really uneasy or  not confident in what I’m doing.

I have sat there and I have over-thought it. And to the point where I’ve actually not even done it, I spent hours doing something and not putting it out there.  on the contrary though, when I’m feeling really assured I just get it done and I get it out there first time. And I’m sure you’ve been in similar situations.

The other part about confidence is also encourages you to step outside your comfort zone. It gets you to step up and step out. It gets you to grow and start taking on bigger challenges and what you perceive as obstacles in your business. I was actually speaking to one of my mentors just over the weekend.

And she said, you start gobbling up obstacles for breakfast. And I thought that was such a great way of putting it. You get hungry for them and you just want to start taking on more and more and continuing to grow because nothing happens in the comfort zone. Nothing grows there. It’s quite the opposite actually, if you sit in the comfort zone, you actually start to die. [00:11:00] So you don’t want to be there instead, you need to be comfortable in stretching and moving beyond it.

The other really cool thing is that once you’ve done personal development, you actually start seeing your mistakes as learning opportunities, instead of something to cry over. As you grow in business, particularly if you’re in the public eye or something that is out there, you will inevitably start to attract criticisms or people that don’t agree with what you’re doing.

And in this circumstance, it could be so easy to see anything that people disagree with as a personal attack and simply shut up shop and just call it quits right there and then. But if you’ve done the work on yourself, you’re able to feel more confident in yourself and your own abilities.

If someone doesn’t agree with you, or if something doesn’t go quite right, or you had a massive perceived failure in your business, you can pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep moving forward. You’ll learn from it. Or if you need to educate the other person, you can do [00:12:00] that too, but you don’t let that knock you about too much and you don’t take it to heart. You simply brush it off and you move forward. I mean, you’ll never be perfect in anything, but that’s what personal development allows you to see. It allows you to see any mistakes or anything that’s not quite right as a really valuable learning opportunity.  And once you’ve been doing it for a while, you just keep on moving and keep on creating that magic and serving those that you’re here to serve. No one else.

Kingsley: So point number four creates more grit and determination. So grit it’s such a marker for success. It’s a sign of passion around what you do, nothing is gonna get in your way. You dig deep and you persevere. When you’re clear on what your goal is and what you want to achieve. You’ll stop at nothing to get there. Grit and determination, exceed talent.

You can be the most talented in your field. But if you don’t do anything with it, you’re [00:13:00] not going to get anywhere. We all know someone that’s smarter than ourselves, yet less successful than ourselves, because they can’t be bothered putting in the effort. Successful people don’t have more luck. They seize the opportunities and work harder towards achieving them. They create more opportunities for themselves, therefore giving more chances of success, which is a really important difference.

Grit is something that can be developed with practice. Hence why personal development is so important. This is giving away the big secret guys. You don’t need to be the smartest person in the room. You just have to be the person that knows what they want, how to get it and set out to do so without giving up.

It’s about focus and drive to get you the blinkers on eyes on the prize , and distractions are such a big one. When you can’t focus, you’re not giving a hundred percent on whatever you’re [00:14:00] doing.

Your performance suffers and you’ll be way less effective.

it’s as much a mental game is physical game. Find the purpose in what you’re doing, connect with that purpose and your values. Make that strong connection there. And that will drive you. You gotta be optimistic and silence your inner critic, zip them right up. You don’t want to hear that from them again, because they’ll come out in the dark corners.

And then not your friend.

Amanda: Yeah. The inner critic is a main one. Okay.  So our last tip is around personal development, strengthening your passion, which can bring prosperity too.  This is a really interesting one because there are so many people out there who have started something purely as a passion project.

And it has skyrocketed into this absolutely incredible successful career. I mean, who would have ever thought that someone would pay them to do something that they love? It’s  a pretty special thought. Really? Isn’t it.

[00:15:00] Personal development comes into this is it helps you to really get clear and understand where your values lie and what you’re passionate about because when you’re doing something, which brings you that true passion, others can see it and they want to pay you to do it for them because you’ve typically spent hours and hours and hours delving deep into the topic or the craft, and have a much higher level of knowledge or expertise around this than they do, because they simply don’t have the passion for it.

To be able to spend that length of time doing it. So it’s pretty cool to consider that you could earn a living doing something that you love, which you wouldn’t really even consider truly to be work.

So let’s have a quick recap of why personal development is integral to your success.

First of all, it improves your self awareness.

Second, it expands your perspective and allows you to start living without limits

Third. It makes you so much more confident and builds your resilience too

[00:16:00] Fourth. It creates more grit and determination.

And then lastly, it strengthens your passion, which can bring prosperity.

So what are some simple things that you guys can do to start down your own personal development path?
